Weymouth: Groundbreaking Held for New Chapman Middle School

A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction for the $164 million Maria Weston Chapman Middle School in Weymouth, the first school built in the town in nearly 60 years. Designed to accommodate 1,470 students in grades 6-8, the 250,000-square-foot facility will include a renovated gymnasium, walking paths, fitness areas, and a public-access auditorium for community events. The Massachusetts School Building Authority is contributing $57 million to the project, which is expected to be completed by September 2022. Voters approved the town’s first debt exclusion override in 2019 to fund the school, which promises a modern, innovative learning environment and a traditional middle school structure to realign district grades.
