Best Government Public Buildings: Rhode Island Veterans Home

The Rhode Island Veterans Home in Providence was recognized as the “Best Government Public Building” for its innovative design and construction. The 254,000-square-foot facility spans 47 acres and includes six prefabricated, wood-framed resident buildings housing 208 beds, as well as a two-story, steel-framed commons building with 16 beds, a dining facility, therapy suites, and administrative spaces.

The project team, led by Gilbane Building Co. and Brewster Thornton Group Architects, utilized prefabrication to accelerate construction, improve quality, and streamline logistics. Prefabricated wall panels and on-site roof truss assembly enhanced efficiency while ensuring proper placement and structural integrity.

The facility is the first in the U.S. designed using the Small House Model Design Guide from the Department of Veterans Affairs, emphasizing a more personal and home-like environment for residents. Key challenges, such as complex plumbing for the dental suite and therapy pool installation, were resolved through early coordination and strategic planning.

Judges praised the project for its thoughtful design and significant impact on the veteran community.
