Transforming Historic Abbot Buildings in Harvard Square
Shawmut Design and Construction is transforming the historic Abbot Buildings in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA, into a revitalized 60,000-square-foot mixed-use space. In partnership with Regency Centers and Prellwitz Chilinski Associates, the project includes restoring the Abbot Building and 18 Brattle Street, demolishing a structure, and constructing a four-story infill building. The renovation preserves the buildings’ historic Georgian Revival character while introducing modern amenities, including updated retail, restaurant, and office spaces, and a green roof deck with views of Harvard and Brattle Square. Targeting LEED Silver certification, the project blends historical preservation with contemporary design, enhancing the area while honoring its architectural legacy.
